For Chamber Ensemble
Duration: 8 minutes
Commissioned by the BASBWE College Commission Consortium.
Tetrasemic - equivalent to four short syllables. This piece for flute, trumpet, saxophone quartet (SATB), and two percussion, can best be described as a hybrid of two, opposing musical ideas. The slow opening section sees the introduction of a tranquil, flowing melody which is abruptly interrupted by a four-note cell. The piece develops the relationship between these two ideas both in collaboration and opposition, ending without any real sense that the argument has been resolved.
First performed by the London College of Music and Media, conducted by John Kelly, at the Purcell Room, South Bank Centre - London, 26th November 2001.
