WIDE OPEN SPACES
For Wind Ensemble
Duration: 4 minutes
As you leave the town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire (England) heading west, you arrive in the picturesque village of Beckwithshaw. Drive through the village and take the first right, which leads up to Stainburn Moor, and as you pass the small car park on your left, you reach the crest of a hill. As you go over the top of this hill you are presented with a stunning view over the Yorkshire Dales, spreading for miles beyond you.
We (as a family) have spent many happy days up at Stainburn Moor with our children and dogs, and I have long wanted to write a piece of music about it - my personal soundtrack to this panorama, if you will - and so here it is, dedicated to spectacular outlooks, wherever in the world they may be.
As an additional note, the photo on the front of the score is of Becca and our children (Ruben, Ava, Elsa & Caspar), taken on Stainburn Moor, in October 2015.
Wide Open Spaces was written for the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minnesota, USA) High School Honor Band Festival, October 2016.
